The Rapid Palatal Expander - RPE
RPE's are used to widen the upper jaw and create more room for the permanent teeth. They are also used when there is a cross bite present. Here Is How Your RPE Works
The maxilla (the upper jaw) is joined in the center by a suture, or joint, which allows it to be painlessly separated and spread. Each time you turn the screw within the RPE it widens the jaw 1/4mm. We usually have the screw turned for no more than 40 days or a total of 10mm of expansion. Once this has occurred, the two halves of the jaw will knit back together and new bone is then formed to make the jaw wider.
You will notice an increase in saliva production. The brain thinks there is food in the mouth not knowing the difference. This will be back to normal in a couple of days
What to Expect
The RPE should be turned as instructed. The key is inserted in the hole at the front of the expander and pushed all the way back until the next hole appears.
You will feel a slight pressure around the nose area in the beginning but not after a couple of weeks.
You will see a space appear between your front teeth but this will close once we are through turning the expander.
If you feel there is trouble with swallowing try drinking small sips of water during this adjustment period. Or you can try using a straw.
Speech will be affected in the beginning but by reading out loud this will quickly go away.
Should the RPE become loose please call the office.
The RPE will be left in place from 6-9 months.
