First Aid Information
First of all if you have a problem - do not panic. Fortunately, you can fix many of these annoyances with do-it-yourself remedies at home. Plus you can save yourself a trip to our office. These problems need not cause a delay in your treatment. For most remedies, a pencil with eraser, tweezers, Q- tips and dental wax is all you will need.
Poking Wire
Ends of wires that suddenly protrude are common problems. First, try to push the wire back with either the eraser of a pencil or tweezers. You may also place wax on the area that is poking.
A Wire Has Come Out
You can reinsert the wire into its holder yourself with tweezers.
Broken Springs
If you have springs instead of rubber bands and they break just replace the spring with a rubber band until your next visit.
Broken Bracket
The o-ring attached to the bracket should keep the bracket connected to the main wire and you can usually wait until your next appointment to have it fixed. You can also place wax on the broken bracket if it is uncomfortable. You should call for a new appointment if you have a broken bracket. A $50.00 charge is applied after the 90 day warranty.
Teeth Are Sore
Your teeth will normally be sore after an adjustment appointment. To alleviate the soreness you can take Tylenol. Rinsing with warm salt water will help too. Your teeth should be sore for around 3 days.
Broken or Lost Retainer
If you break your retainer we will need to take a new impression for a new one. If it is cracked, call the office to arrange a time to see if it can be repaired. There is a charge for a lost or broken retainer.
Sore Spot or Ulcer On Cheek
These will occur right after you get your braces on. While you are waiting for them to heal and toughen up, place wax on the bracket or brackets that are causing the irritation. You may also ask your pharmacist to recommend an over-the-counter numbing product to apply to the sore spot.
Home Remedy for Cold Sores
If you have a cold sore you can mix together 1 Tablespoon each of Maalox and Benadryl and dab it on the sore with a Q-Tip; or if you have multiple mouth sores, use it as a mouthwash 3-4 times per day.
Spacer Fell Out
Take a clean spacer and insert two strands of dental floss through it. Holding both pieces of floss tightly, gradually wiggle the spacer back into position. Once it is in place, pull the strands out.
